Why Do I Need to Bleach My Hair for Trendy Shades such as Ash Brown, Rose Gold or Gray?
Bonus: Hair Tips to Reduce Damage from Bleach

Why Do You Have to Bleach Your Hair to Dye Certain Hair Colours? – That’s a common question many customers have. After all, don’t we all wish to achieve gorgeous-looking shades – such as ash brown, grey, rose gold hues, pastels and beige blondes – without bleaching our hair? This way, we can avoid damaging our precious hair.

Before answering that question, we need to understand what bleach does to our hair first?

What Does Bleaching Do to Your Hair?

What Does Bleaching Do to Your Hair?

Bleach helps to strip the colour of our hair strands by dissolving the hairs natural melanin or previous dye pigments. Thereafter, we can then deposit new colour pigments into our hair. In most cases, the hair has to be lightened to a shade slightly lighter than the desired hair dye, for the colour to be accurate and visible.

Why Do I Need to Bleach My Hair for Trendy Shades such as Ash Brown, Rose Gold or Even Cool Brown?

Why Do I Need to Bleach My Hair for Trendy Shades

1. Existing Hair Pigments Will Alter the Desired Dye’s Colour

Take for example, Asian’s hair predominantly consists of red pigments. If we add Ash dyes, which is usually made up of blue pigments, the end result will not be Ash tones. Instead, it will appear to be magenta.

Similarly, if the lightening procedure isn’t done sufficiently, the hair will contain orange pigments. Hence, if we add Ash dyes (blue pigments), the end result will be greenish-looking.

In conclusion, bleaching existing hair is required to create a “clean” canvas for new hair dyes to appear as it is. This is especially so when the desired hair dyes are on the opposite spectrum of the colour wheel.

This is also why you should never use a box dye. Box dye tends to over deposit pigments into our hair. This causes complications to future colour service, as intense lightening is needed to remove these dyes. Otherwise, the colour will turn out patchy!

2. Hair Dyes Cannot Lift Existing Hair Colour Effectively

This is a phrase used commonly by hairdressers. But what exactly does it mean to a layman?

It simply means that we are unable to achieve the desired level of lightness using hair dyes alone. Take a look at the illustration below:

For example, we would like to achieve a lighter hair shade – say blonde. However, our current hair shade is dark brown. Adding light pigments will only turn our dark hair shade to a medium brown level, which is not the level of lightness we desire.

Trivial: Hair dyes alone usually lifts 1 to 2 level, only.

In short, bleaching is needed to achieve lighter hair colours. See illustration below.

Does Bleach Damage Your Hair?

Does Bleach Damage Your Hair?

Yes, it does! And, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. That said, technology has improved considerably in the past 10 years.

With the help of plex treatments – like Olaplex, Smart Bond, BondPro+ – the level of damages caused by bleach has been reduced drastically. However, there’s still a certain degree of damage posed to the hair.

How to Bleach Your Hair without Damaging Your Hair Excessively?

Hair Tips #1: Prep Your Hair 1 Month Before Your Colour Service, the Correct Way

With the rising popularity of bond-repairing technology, customers are over-relying on it solely to treat their hair.

Hear it first from us! To have healthy hair, we need to “tackle” it from three aspects. Doing so will improve hair’s resilience against any lightening service – thus reducing damage.

For a lack of better analogy: It’s a little like Vitamin C is good for our body, but that doesn’t mean that our food intake should comprise solely of Vitamin C, right?

1. Bond Strengthening

Olaplex no. 3

Use Goldwell Dualsenses Bond Pro 60 sec Treatment or Olaplex no. 3 twice a week. These products will strengthen the hair bonds to prevent breakage during upcoming lightening procedures.

2. Reduce Porosity with Proteins

Oribe Gold Lust Transformative Masque

For daily conditioning, use a protein-rich formula such as Oribe Gold Lust Transformative Masque (yes, it can be used daily) to “mend the holes” in our hair. This way, hair is more resilient to future chemical services.

3. Enhance Elasticity with Moisture

Enhance Elasticity with Moisture

Indulge your hair with a moisture-rich masque as least once a week. Do you know that moisture is an important factor when it comes to elasticity? Without elasticity, hair will break easily.

Hair Tips #2: Bond Strengthening Treatment is a Must

Bond Strengthening Treatment is a Must

We cannot emphasize this enough. If you’re bleaching your hair, please opt for plex treatments to be included in the bleach – by all means!

It makes a huge difference. This is NOT a conspiracy theory. #facepalm

Hair Tips #3: Post Care Maintenance for Your Hair

Post a colour service, it is always advisable to replenish moisture and protein back to the hair to reduce the rate of future deterioration. In-salon treatments such as Tokio Inkarami Hair Treatment and Foundation Sugar Hair Lamination Treatment are great options!
