Top 7 Common Reasons Why Your Perm Can Go Very Wrong
imagine strutting into a salon hoping to pay for these,
but ended up with this?
you will be surprised by how many customers ended up with sleepless nights when their dreams of having Korean soft waves became their greatest nightmares. read on to see how you can prevent this mishap from happening to you too!
#1 SORRY. YOUR HAIR DON’T FIT THE BILL.
before you bungee jump, you will have to ensure that you do not have any heart conditions, high blood pressure, spinal injuries, so on and so forth. similarly, before you undergo any digital (heat) perm, you should check to ensure that you do not have these pre-existing “conditions” to minimize the risk of having a botched perm job.
highlighted hair (high lift colour)
keratin (formaldehyde) treated hair
chemically permed hair in the last 1 year
chemically straightened hair in the last 1 year
pretty much dry, damaged, and neglected hair
as a rule of thumb, you will need healthy hair, free of metallic salts (some henna contains them) and formaldehyde (certain keratin treatments contain them) to achieve gorgeous looking curls. when hair is damaged and neglected, the hair bonds are generally broken. thus, hair will not have the elasticity and resilience to undergo digital (heat) perm. more often than not, the curls will turn out to be “lifeless” or even “fried”. why take the risk?
#2 NOT CHOOSING THE CORRECT HAIRSTYLIST. OOPS. THINGS MIGHT GET A LITTLE TECHNICAL HERE.
your stylist’s experience, expertise and dedication matters! otherwise, situations like these will occur.
incorrect placement roller bands causes unsightly bend marks
mismanaging of duration and heat causes over-processing and damaged hair
erroneous winding techniques creates styles that are not requested by the customer
when customer x requested for associate salon director, veyond chong to fix her bad perm job done in another salon. veyond has to handle her hair with caution as her hair has been badly damaged. veyond had to first treat her hair by fixing the bonds within and strengthen it with customized doses of amino acids. thereafter, veyond painstakingly straightened and re-curled the hair chemically, section by section, with retexturizing lotions packed with moisturizing treatments to remodel it.
uneven tension applied when winding the rods
a bad haircut makes the perm worst as the hair became uneven in terms of length and thickness
when customer y came to chez vous hair salon for help, her hair was badly permed in another salon. associate salon director, veyond chong had to first remodel the hair by cutting her hair. thereafter, she had to reapply tension to re-curl certain sections so as to balance out all the curls.
over-processed curls with incorrect chemicals and techniques
over-texturized haircut that does not create any hair shape and movement
when customer z requested for associate salon director, shawn chia for help with her disastrous curls permed by another salon, shawn assessed her hair and was honest with her that her hair cannot be re-permed, otherwise the risk of breakage will be too high. using an unconventional way of fixing customer z hair, shawn deliberately use a mild softening lotion to relax certain sections that are undesirable and bend certain sections that still can be curled. thereafter, he remodelled her haircut to create seemingly soft waves that are nicely blended.
#3 IF ONLY WE CARE FOR OUR HAIR AS MUCH AS WE DO FOR OUR FACE.
our hair needs to be cared for in a comprehensive manner just like our face. however, many customers only focus on treating their hair with moisture-rich products, which gives them soft, silky and smooth-to-touch hair, neglecting the strengthening aspect. healthy hair requires 3 components: (1) moisture for softness and shine, (2) strong bonds for elasticity and resilience, (3) proteins for strength and repair.
opt for products such as Redken’s Extreme CAT or Goldwell Kerasilk Reconstruct Homecare series to strengthen your hair and alternate it with your usual moisture-rich homecare. 1 month prior to any chemical perm service, use Redken’s Extreme CAT Reconstructing Treatment Spray daily on cleaned hair, rinse off, and followed by Goldwell Kerasilk Reconstruct Mask to better prep hair for the service. for optimal care, undergo monthly synchronized advanced hair rebuilder therapy developed by chez vous to repair hair bonds on a cellular level, strengthen hair with rare top-notched cystine (amino acids), and give hair the moisture boost it needs with a potent blend of ceramides. your hair will thank you for it in the long run.
#4 NOT ALL CURLS ARE CREATED EQUAL CHEMICALLY
hoping to sport 2016 korean mool gyul waves that are in vogue recently or the ever classic victoria's secret beachy curls?
oops. sorry to burst your bubble. but, most of these curls or waves inspiration we admire are created through heat-styling – not all of them can be created via chemical perms. make sure you look for a hairstylist who is honest enough, and have the integrity to inform you if the type of curls you desire are feasible and attainable.
#5 CELEBRITY WORTHY CURLS NEEDS TO BE MAINTAINED AND CREATED
the most common misconception that many women have about chemical perms is that they will achieve an #iwokeuplikethis celebrity-worthy curls just like that. many do not realize that there is a need for them to create the desired look through some form of styling and maintenance even after a perm service. always ask the stylist for the type of maintenance effort required before proceeding with any perm services.
#6 JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT IT WAS A LONG TIME AGO.
at chez vous, we usually ask for a detailed history of what’s done on our customers hair before recommending any services or styles to avoid any complications. some customers have this misconception that once they “cover” their previously processed hair with darker shades or have not chemically retexturize their hair for a long period of time, they can then perm it again. unfortunately, the best way to undergo another perm service is to cut away those previously processed hair for best results.
#7 YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE CLEAR ENOUGH.
avoid using supposedly “universal” hair terms like “korean curls”, “volume waves” or “beach waves” during consultation as these terms mean different things to different stylists. always show the hairstyles you desire with photos or videos to avoid any miscommunication. yes, pictures do speak a thousand words.
can all bad perms be rectified? the answer is no. botched perms can be rectified via a re-perm or relaxer service, only if the hair is not badly damaged. any re-worked has to be technically precise and this requires a lot of experience and knowledge. there are no room for errors!
