STEP 1: SHOULD YOU CHOP OR STOP?
At Chez Vous, we believe that the right length depends on your face shape and personality. When in doubt, use the 3-inch golden rule for Asians. This rule is a great way to differentiate a long-shaped face and one that is shorter.
First, get a ruler and a comb ready. Position the comb horizontally below our chin, then place the ruler vertically below the ear. The distance between the pencil and the ruler is what we want to measure. Close to 3-inch Lucky you! You look great whether you chop it short or keep it long.
Shorter than 3-inch
Chop please. If is less than 3 inches, it means you have a shorter face, which suits shorter cuts like the Bob. In fact, many Asian ladies have this type of face shape.
Longer than 3-inch
Keep your tresses down. A longer face favours longer locks. Think Kim Kardashian.
Of course, many women are afraid to cut their hair short, fret not. There's always the Lob (Long Bob), which is, as you would have guessed, is a longer version of a Bob. It usually stops at the shoulder or goes past a little (this really depends on how long your neck is). This versatile style is able to hide the larger lower jaws too, yet it is neither too long nor too short. Many ladies, with longer face shape are going for the Lob, for a change.
STEP 2: FRINGE BENEFITS
Your bangs should be chosen based on your face shape too, to create the ideal contour oval.
Long Face Shape:
Fringes work wonders for those of you with a longish face. Ideally, the bangs should start from one cheekbone and end at the other cheekbone, blending into the two sides to create a more ovalish face shape.
Inverted Triangle Face Shape:
This is a bit trickier. The fringe must be shorter or part in the middle, and allow the length to increase gradually post the arch of your brows until it reaches the widest point of your face. Voila! You have just created a more ovalish face shape with this new hairdo.
Short Jawlines Face Shape:
The way to deal with short jawlines is to have a long side-parted fringe that is extended and layered gradually to create a more elongated look.
Square Face Shape:
Layered long side-parted fringe also suits women with square face shapes. The parting should start from the arch of the brow, and longest length of the fringe should end below the widest point of your cheekbones, covering it soft blended layers. Never try a hard full bangs that is above the brows, unless you're Jessie J, full of personality and character to pull off such a look.
High or Wide Forehead Shape:
Again, bangs comes in handy for some cover-up duty. Dense and thick bangs (either straight or side-swept) that start an inch below the highest point of the crown will do just that. A length between the eyebrow and eyelid works best.
Round Face Shape:
Moon-faced ladies wont go wrong with a 3:7 side-parted long layered fringe. The longer end must be long enough to conceal the largest part of your face, making it appear slimmer. Never, ever go above the brows unless you have short forehead!
With the correct cut, layers and fringe type, women with rounder face can sport short hairstyles too. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
For a sweeter alternative, a textured or Korean-inspired airy fringe where the length gradually increase post the arch of your brows until it reaches the widest point of your face will work too.
STEP 3: COLOUR MY HAIR, COLOUR MY LIFE!
What colour goes well with you? Hair colouring besides being a statement of personal style, it can also brighten someone with sallow or dark skin tone significantly!
Asians tend to have yellowish skin and may find it difficult to choose the right hue. Try putting a white piece of A4 paper against your face in natural or white light and look at yourself in the mirror. Is your skin tone reddish, fair, dark or lack radiance?
Although the main focus is on matching hair colour and skin tone, do take the colour of your eyes, your favourite lips and makeup shades into consideration too so that you won't look like a sad mismatch.
Fair (Pale or Ivory) Asian Skin Tones
Guess what? Most hair colours go well with fair skin tone except blonde. Light blonde shades might make one look ghost-like, unless, of course you do put on makeup regularly such as a bold lipstick colour; or eyeliner; or some blush to go along with it. Yes, we're all so envious of the fair damsel, who can take on almost any colour.
Reddish Asian Skin Tones
Suitable hair colours: coppery gold, ash brown, dark brown, olive, greenish or blueish Hues.
Colours to avoid: Maroon Red, Wine Red and other Warm Colours
Many women with reddish skin tones could be due to sensitivity of their skin, or the fact that their skin is very thin, hence revealing fine capillaries. Try olive hue, or take on coppery gold or ash brown. Maroon red, wine red and other warm colours will enhance the reddish tone on one's face, so these are a no-go.
Healthy Asian Skin Tones
Suitable hair colours: dark brown, dark blue, red copper, rose gold, reddish brown
Colours to avoid: Brown, Brass
Those who are not that fair can pick darker browns, reddish hair colours so that the skin tone appears lighter. Want to have an instant brightening laser treatment? Try Rose Gold or Strawberry Red hues.
Darker Asian Skin Tones
Suitable hair colours: brown, gold copper, copper, copper red
Colours to avoid: yellow-brown, yellow-green and other colours with yellow hues
Ladies with darker skin tones need brighter colours to bring out their skin colours, and brown hues have the greatest effect. Colours like copper browns or light browns will make darker skin elude a softer charm. Highlighting could be a choice too but stay away from highlights that are too yellowish. Black lowlights is an option too if you have natural brown tones to begin with.
